The Golisano Institute for Sustainability is a multidisciplinary academic unit at RIT whose mission is to undertake world-class education and research programs in sustainability with major foci on sustainable production, sustainable energy, sustainable mobility and ecologically friendly information technology systems. The programs of institution at the institute can lead to degrees including master of architecture and MS in sustainable systems. MLA was asked to design the new Quad for Golisano.
The design team prepared concept through final design, construction documents and provided construction oversight services for the new Quad at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT. The team worked closely with RIT facilities, administration and educators to assure that the design met the client’s needs as well as RIT’s commitment to sustainability which was integral in the design. The new 225,000 SF Sustainability Institute Hall building was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council, which sets goals for waste and energy minimization and reuse in building construction and operation. The new quad design celebrates and showcases the same standards and goals in its design. The design incorporate an emergency vehicle access loop, geothermal energy system, an existing water feature, a Albert Paley sculpture, and State of the art lighting.
